Teen Suicide Prevention - Leadership Opportunity

The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (SPTS) is currently seeking applications from Monmouth and Ocean County high school students for a place on their Youth Council Board for the 2016-2017 academic year.

In its initial year, more than 60 students from over 25 high schools in Monmouth and Ocean County joined the SPTS Youth Council to help prevent teen suicide. Youth Council members play a crucial role in helping to develop programs for community outreach in and around Monmouth and Ocean counties, as well as nationwide. Their voices will help shape what projects the organization undertakes, and they'll have a chance to help save lives.

Here is the Youth Council Application, due by June 30, 2016.

National STEM Video Game Challenge

Level up from video game player to video game designer!

Inspired by President Obama’s Educate to Innovate Campaign to promote a renewed focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, the National STEM Video Game Challenge taps into middle and high school students’ passion for playing video games and motivates them to work as individuals or in teams to design and make original, playable games or written game design documents about any subject.

The STEM Challenge is open to students in the U.S. in grades five through 12. The deadline to submit entries is August 15, 2016. Each winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000, as well as game design and educational software. Student winners will be invited to a special event at National Geographic in Washington, D.C. in November.

Governor's STEM Scholars 2016-17

The Governor’s STEM Scholars is New Jersey’s premier program promoting STEM education and workforce development in the state. Founded in 2013, it is a public-private partnership among the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, Governor’s Office, New Jersey Department of Education, and Secretary of Higher Education. The goal of the program is to educate students about STEM opportunities within the state, as well as to encourage New Jersey’s economic development by further developing New Jersey’s STEM talent pipeline. This is a free program open to New Jersey students in grades 10-Ph.D.

Over the course of the academic year, the program provides a merit-based comprehensive introduction to New Jersey’s STEM economy to the state’s best and brightest high school, college, and graduate students through a series of conferences, field trips, a research project, and professional opportunities. The program offers scholars mentoring opportunities and enables them to make personal and professional connections that can last throughout their academic and professional careers. By the time the program is over, each scholar will have received a first-class education about the state’s vast STEM economy.
