Opportunity for Juniors
Governor's School of New Jersey is a unique summer program committed to meeting the educational needs of academically talented high school students who have completed their junior year. Emphasis is placed on problem solving of complex issues that exist on a local, state, national, and international level, and leadership training. There are 2 different NJ Governor Governor School Programs:
- School of Engineering & Technology (Rutgers)
- School in the Sciences (Drew University)

June 26 – July 22, 2016
The Governor's School of Engineering & Technology (GSET) is a unique and intensive residential summer program that brings together some of New Jersey’s most talented and motivated high school students. At no cost to their families, students spend one month of the summer following their junior year studying on the campus of the Rutgers University School of Engineering. Through team-based courses in areas such as “Robot Soccer” and research projects ranging from designing water purification systems for the developing world to using “Wiimotes” for medical rehabilitation, students collaborate on cutting-edge topics. The scholars work with peers and professors who are both very smart and very enthusiastic about engineering and technology.
GSET aims high. Scholars gain hands-on experience in research and work on challenging and open-ended problems with others who share their love for engineering and technology. Free of grades and official credit, GSET emphasizes current research trends and teamwork. The hands-on learning environment is unique, non-traditional, and inspirational. For many of our scholars, this is their first opportunity to collaborate with other students with the same academic talent and motivation. It’s no surprise, then, that our alumni consider GSET to be not just an important educational foundation, but also one of the best experiences of their lives.
Throughout the program, scholars are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their education and to develop their ideas; entrepreneurship is highly encouraged. Governor’s School scholars can expect to be challenged and to work very hard. In return, they will reap the benefits of an environment in which discovery and the pursuit of knowledge are primary, but in which everyone has a lot of fun. Scholars can also expect to develop strong academic relationships with their research mentors at Rutgers, engineering professionals, and each other.
Governor’s School in the Sciences
Drew University

The Governor’s School in the Sciences (GSS) brings the best science and mathematics students of the state together for a three-week summer residential program held on the campus of Drew University. The program exposes these exceptional scholars to courses, laboratories, team projects, and special lectures that encourage them to explore a career in science and math. This is enhanced by a Career Day, where alumni join other professionals in sharing their experiences
There are no examinations or grades, and the program emphasizes group learning and collaboration in the work and study students do during the program. The program seeks to create an atmosphere of collaboration, study, and socializing in the residence hall through activities supervised by staff who promotes the concept of a community of interested scholars. Consequently, scholars experience a taste of what college will be like.
The program is free of tuition and fees. Funds are raised from private and corporate sponsors. Scholars for this summer’s program are selected based on the excellence of their academic performance, written essays, standardized test scores, math and science teacher recommendations, and extracurricular activities in and out of science.
How To Apply:
BTHS is able to nominate one outstanding junior to apply for each Governor School Program (one nominee for GSS at Drew and one nominee for GSET at Rutgers). If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, chose one of the programs (can't apply to both) and submit the following:
(1) A brief essay (maximium of 1 page) explaining your interest in attending this program. Be sure to specify which of the programs you are interested in (either GSS at Drew or GSET at Rutgers)
(2) A 1 to 2 page resume containig the following:
- Extracurricular activities (both in school and out of school)
- Community service
- Leadership experiences
- Awards and achievements
- Skills and talents
