College Updates For Seniors

January updates / reminders from the Guidance Office for seniors:

FAFSA - The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) became available on January 1, 2016. You must complete the FAFSA in order to be eligible for financial aid from the federal government. Click here to read a letter from the MCVSD Career Academy Counselors with information regarding the FAFSA.

Updating Decisions in Naviance - As you receive responses from colleges, please remember to update your results in Naviance. On the "Colleges I'm Applying To" page, you can update the “Results” category by clicking on the pencil next to that column.

Withdrawing Apps if Accepted ED - If you were accepted to a college through Early Decision, you must withdraw all of your other completed applications. Each college will have their own procedures for withdrawing applications. Start by searching on their website to see if you can find directions. If you can’t find any, send an email to the general admissions and/or the local rep, informing them that you've been accepted to a different college through Early Decision and would like to withdraw your application.

Deferral Action Plan - If you were deferred through early admissions, be sure to check out this article that outlines an action plan on how you can advocate for yourself. Deferred does not mean no and there is a lot that you can do to improve your chances. Note that the strategies in the article also apply to wait-list decisions and cases in which you were accepted at a school, but denied into a specific program.

College Decision Matrix - If you find yourself torn between multiple colleges, the College Decision Matrix can be a helpful resource for you. Although your college decision is ultimately subjective, the Decision Matrix is an objective way to compare and evaluate your options, based on the criteria that is important to you.
